Flood and Moving Water Talking Points
- Floods are dangerous. They kill hundreds each year.
- Many deaths appear due to lack of awareness that driving or wading
in moving water can easily kill.
- Vehicles don't provide protection from moving water. One foot of
water moving at 10 miles per hour will move a care on pavement. Two feet
of water will float a car. The roadway is frequently washed away,
leaving deep potholes in the road surface. As soon as the vehicle stalls
or water rises above the bottom of the door, abandon the car and flee to
high ground.
- Floods cause extreme stress and exertion, both in escaping and
cleaning up. Those with cardiac risks should be cautious.
- Don't allow children to play in ANY flood waters.
- Flood waters are contaminated. Don't walk or swim in or drink flood
water.
- Remember that most flood deaths occur close to home. Evacuate when
it appears prudent and when ordered to do so. Don't rebuild in obvious
flood plains.
- Traffic detours due to flood closures increase the number of motor
vehicle accidents. Drive carefully.
- Be cautious of entering or staying in buildings during a flood.
Electrocution and poisonous fumes are both highly possible.
- Alcohol impairs judgment. Avoid alcohol and other intoxicating
substances during emergencies.
- Don't attempt to wade across water more than one foot deep, or of
unknown depth.
- Stay out of flood control channels.
- Obey lawful orders of police, fire, and emergency workers,
particularly concerning traffic closures and evacuation plans.
- Have a family plan in the event a flood occurs in the middle of a
work day.
- Prepare evacuation packs capable of storing food, clothing, light,
and warmth for each family member for two days
