Just Desserts
KVFD Firefighters took time out of their
busy schedules Friday, May 20th, to help out at the
Shriners Burns Institute
in Galveston, Texas. In order to cheer the patients and residents, SBI
was celebrating "Hawaiian Day" at the hospital complete with hamburgers, hot
dogs, Hawaiian shirts, and the Beach Boys playing over the loudspeakers.
KVFD firefighters were asked to judge the tropical dessert bake-off.
The Shriners Hospital in Galveston is a 30-bed pediatric burn
hospital providing comprehensive acute care and reconstructive and
rehabilitative care to children who have been burned. There is no charge to
the patient or family for any of the medical care or services provided by
Shriners Hospitals. This hospital is one of 22 Shriners Hospitals throughout
North America.
Pictured above are KVFD Firefighters Brian Berlin,
Mike Hamlin, and Marine Captain Gerald Looper tasting and judging
one of the eight entries in the dessert contest. From Flan to Kiwi Key
Lime Pie - there were a wide variety of desserts to sample. After the
judges agreed on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place desserts, the firefighters awarded
medals to the winning chefs.
Following the festivities, the
firefighters were given a tour of the facility. The firefighters were
warmly received by everyone they encountered at the hospital.
