How to Join the Department (in a
nutshell)
-
Come to a 7:00 pm Tuesday
evening meeting/training session at the station (905 Hwy 146). You'll
probably want to
arrive a little early.
-
Introduce yourself to
anyone and tell them you're interested in joining or learning more about
the department.
-
Fill out an
application.
-
Stick around and see what the
department is all about.
-
Keep coming to the
Tuesday meetings.
You may want to call the department
ahead of time just to make sure that there is, indeed, going to be
something happening at the station on the Tuesday when you're planning
to make your first visit. (281) 538-5727
We're looking forward to meeting you!
Firefighter
"Putting
out
fires is only the beginning!"
As a firefighter, putting out fires and providing emergency medical services to your community
is only the beginning!
Your firefighting membership also offers you countless exciting opportunities to expand your skills
in areas such as Hazardous Materials Response, Specialty Response Teams (dive, rope rescue, confined space, etc.),
EMT care, Public Education & Information, Fire Investigation, and
Fire Code Enforcement.
Teamwork Firefighters work as a team at emergency scenes. The work of a firefighter
also includes training, fire station
maintenance,
equipment maintenance, fire prevention activities, and public education. As a firefighter you must be in excellent physical condition to meet the demands of the job.
This means you must work quickly, handling heavy equipment for long periods of time while wearing special protective gear
-- often in hot and hazardous environments. If you can meet the challenge of strenuous work and like the idea of helping people, consider applying for the position of
firefighter.
Requirements
-
Minimum 18 years of age (out of high school)
-
Valid Texas driver's license with a clear driving
record
-
Live or work within the area served by KFD
-
Must submit to and pass a drug screening and physical (paid for by KFD)
-
Must pass a criminal background check.
Benefits
All fire fighting gear, uniforms, communications equipment and
training are free. Workers compensation insurance will provide payment for
your medical bills from an injury incurred while training or participating
in fire fighting or rescue activities. Accidental death loss benefit of
$150,000 or dismemberment loss according to the policy schedule up to
$150,000.
Most importantly, you will have an opportunity to serve your community.
Application Any prospective member can pick-up and submit an
application for membership at station #1
(905 HWY 146). Station meetings are held most Tuesday evenings beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Training Every new member is required to complete a cadet program before the individual is authorized to fight fire. This program is about 90 hours long and held 2 times a year. Classes are conducted 2 nights a week and on some Saturdays for a period of about 8 weeks.
After the cadet program, the individual is a Probationary Fire Fighter. This is to allow for additional training time at the station-level and for the person to get limited hands-on experience at fires until he/she is ready to be a firefighter.
Equipment The uniform and firefighting clothing is provided to the new member by KFD. This equipment remains the property of the KFD and must be returned upon leave/termination.
